According to His Purpose (Part 2)

Romans 9 takes us into some of the most challenging and humbling territory in all of Scripture. At the heart of this passage is a question that has unsettled believers for centuries: is God fair? We wrestle with the idea that God showed favor to Jacob over Esau before either had done anything good or bad, and that He has mercy on some while hardening others. But before we can even begin to answer that question honestly, we have to reckon with something uncomfortable about ourselves. Our sense of justice is broken. We live in a culture that has redefined fairness on human terms, and without realizing it, we bring that distorted lens to the Word of God. What this passage does is strip that away and call us back to a foundational truth: God is absolutely just, holy, and righteous in all that He does. He does not owe mercy to anyone. Justice means receiving what we deserve, and what we deserve is judgment. When God shows mercy, He is not being unjust. He is being gracious. And the wonder we should carry is not that God judges, but that He saves anyone at all. This is a message that does not leave us in cold theological debate. It brings us to our knees, and ultimately, it brings us to Christ.
